1. Research And Plan Your Trip
Before diving into the thrifting frenzy, take some time to research thrift stores, antique shops, and online furniture thrift stores like Facebook Marketplace, Craigslist, Chairish, and Etsy.
My top favorite thrift stores are Habitat ReStore, Salvation Army, Durham Mission, Cause For Paws, and Goodwill. Planning your trip ensures you hit all the hotspots and maximize your chances of finding that perfect piece.
Things I always have when I go thrifting are a tape measure, my BIG Thrift Energy book, a notebook, a pen, a Cliff Bar, and my Simple Modern checkered tumbler. I have to stay fueled and hydrated.

2. Look For Quality And Potential
Keep an eye out for the best furniture in terms of quality craftsmanship and pieces with potential for transformation. Don’t be deterred by minor flaws โ a little DIY love can turn a thrifted find into a stunning focal point for your home. Or you can turn this furniture hunt into a new side hustle and I have an article that can guide you called How to Make Money on the Side From Home By Flipping Furniture.
3. Be Open-Minded and Creative and Negotiate For A Better Price
Embrace the unexpected! Thrifting is all about thinking outside the box and discovering unique treasures. Be open-minded and let your creativity guide you as you explore thrift shops and garage sales. Don’t be afraid to haggle! Many thrift stores and sellers are open to negotiation, especially if an item has been sitting for a while. Polite negotiation can lead to significant savings on your thrifting haul.

4. Consider DIY Projects
Unleash your inner DIY guru and consider simple projects to breathe new life into thrifted furniture. A fresh coat of paint, new hardware, or reupholstering can work wonders and add a personal touch to your finds.
This chair was in semi-good condition! The upholstery was clean and there were no rips or tears. It just needed some TLC on the legs and wood decorative accents. I painted it with some Dixie Belle Chalk paint in the color “Drop Cloth” and used a dark and clear wax to give it a little patina and some great paint protection.

5. Pick-Up Made Easy
Transporting larger thrifted furniture? No sweat! Consider renting or borrowing a spacious truck or van for hassle-free pick-up. It’s a convenient way to bring home your fabulous finds without breaking a sweat or your budget.
The story on my L-shaped sofa is that when we tried purchasing one new in our new home, the wait time was anywhere from 6 weeks to 6 months to get a new sofa. My husband and I decided we would search for one second-hand in good condition. I ended up finding this almost brand-new Wayfair sofa on Facebook Marketplace.
The girl who was selling it had just purchased it but was in a position where she had to move home with her family. So we got a great deal on this sofa! I rented a U-Haul truck and my husband and I hustle to go pick up this sofa ASAP and we are so happy we did!
A couple of years later, I have been able to decorate this room a bit more and add more of my own style to add more character and color to this sofa and my living room!
6. Check For Hidden Gems In The Store
Dig deep and scour every corner of the thrift store โ you never know what treasures you might uncover that are in good condition. Keep an eye out for overlooked items tucked away amidst the clutter.
These side tables ended up making the perfect addition to my guest room. They were the perfect size and I loved the imperfections on the wood finish for a farmhouse-inspired room.
7. Cleaning And Refurbishing Items
Give your thrifted finds some TLC by cleaning and refurbishing them before bringing them into your home. Address any stains, odors, or minor repairs to ensure your pieces look their best.
